Rice Goddess/Rice Mother came to reside in the land of rice fields from Mount Meru, home of Buddhist gods. Her journey over 7 Seas & 7 Mountain Ranges was long & tortuous. On her heels came the fish which so plentiful in Siamese waters. When rice plants begin to seed, rice becomes pregnant. This is a crisis in the life of the plant & its spirit is strengthened. During every crisis of life/birth, puberty, marriage/a ceremony is performed to strengthen spirit. For pregnant Rice Mother an offering is made of fruit & sugar cane. The farmer's bamboo basket hangs on a pole in fields to serve as a warning to trespassers to keep their animals from treading on rice plants. He prays thru his offering Rice Mother will thrive & not come to harm. After harvest, rice missed in reaping, is gathered, with an entreaty to her to leave the field, where she may be in danger of prowling mice & birds & come & live in the barn. When threshing is done, a food offering is made to Rice Mother. What rice remains on the threshing floor is put in her basket/spirit essence of rice. A doll is made of rice straw & mixed with this paddy/as an image of Rice Mother & kept in the barn with paddy essence. When sowing of rice begins in the rainy season, Rice Mother's essence mixed with paddy to be sown, to insure fertility. The doll is ceremoniously destroyed. At the end of a meal children raise their hands palm to palm in thanksgiving to Rice Mother. Her ire is incurred, when eating & grains of rice fall to the floor or are stepped on or leftover rice is discarded. If one wishes to criticize the way rice has been cooked, one must beg Rice Mother's pardon first & then politely make one's complaint. When fed to animals/main source of food for cats, dogs, pigs, chickens, ducks, cows & buffalo rice must be offered in a container, not scattered on the ground, Rice Mother's wrath may be incurred. The threatening danger is that she will leave the offender & only bad luck will surround him without her.
